Abstract

Objectives: Cataract is the most common cause of reversible legal blindness. At present in Colombia there is no study that includes the position of ophthalmologists on alternative methods such as immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery. Materials and Methods: Prospective study compiling the attitudes of 125 members of the Colombian Society of Ophthalmology on the practice of immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery, based on a questionnaire, with a central question “Do you regularly practice immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery?” Results: The 36% of ophthalmologists regularly perform immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery; only 7.2% estimate that they perform it on 21% or more of their patients. For these surgeons, cost-effectiveness and patient convenience were the main driving factors. Conclusions: The study shows that surgeons who do not perform immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery would be willing to do so if there were guidelines from the specialty society and medical-legal insurance companies supporting its practice. Clinical Importance: Immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery offers the patient and the surgeon advantages. However, its use is not popular in Colombia for several reasons. This study compiles the opinions of some surgeons about this technique in their ordinary practice.
