Modern Scleral-Fixation Techniques for Foldable Intraocular Lenses

Abstract

Objective: To carry out a review in the scientific literature of the latest scleral-fixation techniques for foldable intraocular lenses. Materials and Methods: A review of scientific articles published in ophthalmological medical journals on sclera fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses was conducted since 1986, when Malbran and col. first described the technique. Results: 51 published articles were reviewed. The main techniques for fixing folding intraocular lenses to sclera without suture, without suture and with tissue glue, and with various types of sutures are described. Conclusion: Suture-free sclera-fixation techniques offer many advantages, reducing the incidence of severe complications in the postoperative period. However. In recent years new sclera-fixation techniques have been described using different types of sutures and models of intraocular lenses (IOLs), offering a new horizon in this fascinating field of ophthalmology. Clinical Importance: The rupture of the posterior capsule in cataract surgery occurs in approximately 0.9% of cases and when there is not enough capsular support to place the intraocular lens, the techniques of sclera fixation of intraocular lenses offer one of the best options for the treatment of these patients.
